38:1


صٓ Saad

Sad

وَالْقُرْآنِ By the Quran

(Arabic Letter ص" "Sad" and by the oath of the Al-Quran for the remembrance (that the Al Quran is for remembering).

بَلِ Nay

Bali

الَّذِينَ those who

allatheena

كَفَرُوا disbelieve

وَشِقَاقٍ and opposition

كَفَرَ فِي عَزَّ شْقى


Those who are unjust are in pride and dissension (disunity, discord).

كَمْ How many?

أَهْلَكْنَا We destroyed

هَلَكَ قَبِلَ قرن ندا NF حَانَ نَصَّ


How many dwellings before them have We destroyed? They called (they are repenting now to escape punishment) when the determined time came.

38:4


وَعَجِبُوٓا And they wonder

كَذَّابٌ a liar

عَجَبَ جَاءَ نَذَرَ قَالَ كَفَرَ سَحَرَ كَذَبَ


And they were surprised when a warner came to them from among them. The ungrateful said, “This is a lying magician.”

38:5


أَجَعَلَ Has he made?

جعل إِله إِله أحد شِاءَ عَجَبَ


Did he make the gods as one God? That is a surprising thing.”

38:6


وَانطَلَقَ And went forth

لَشَىْءٌ (is) certainly a thing

طَلُقَ مَلَأَ مَشَى صَبَرَ إِله شِاءَ رَادَ


The chiefs among them released (started) an unrestrained outburst: “Continue and have patience with your gods. Indeed, this is the thing desired.

38:7

سَمَعَ فِي مَلَّ أخر خَلَقَ


We have never heard like this in the other generations. This is nothing but a fabrication.

38:8


أَءُنزِلَ Has been revealed?

نَزَلَ ذَكّرَ بَا نَ فِي شَكَّ ذَكّرَ ذاق عَذُبَ


Is the remembrance sent down (only) on him, among us?” But they are in doubt of My remembrance. But they have not yet tasted (My) punishment.

38:9


أَمْ Or

Am

عِندَهُمْ have they

عَنَدَ خَزَنَ رَحِمَ رَبَّ عَزَّ وَهَبَ


Or do they possess the treasures of Mercy of your Rabb, the Most Powerful, the Most Giving (Generous)?

Am

ملك سما أَ رَضْ بَا نَ رَقَيَ فِي سَبَّ


Or do they possess ownership of the universe and the earth, and what is between them? Then let them climb through the means (to reach the sky and show their control).

38:11


جُندٌ Soldiers

Jundun

There, they will be a defeated army of confederates (an alliance of defeated unbelievers).

كَذَبَ قَبِلَ قَامَ عاد ذُو نهر


Nations of Noah, Aad, and Firon with stakes had denied before them, (they thought they had firmly established civilization to stay).

38:13


وَثَمُودُ And Thamud

وَقَوْمُ and (the) people

لْـَٔيْكَةِ (of) the wood

الْأَحْزَابُ (were) the companies

١٣

قَامَ صَحِبَ حَزَبَ


And Samood and the nation of Lut and companions of the Aikaa (the people of Madyan and Aika, companions of the Wood since they used to worship a large tree, the ancient name of Tabuk, to whom Prophet Shu'aib peace be upon him, was sent as a prophet), those were the confederates (an alliance of unbelievers).

38:14

They all denied the Messengers, so the punishment was justified.

وَمَا And not

These people were not given a respite. Except for one shout, they were in a death rattle (part of the dying process).

وَقَالُوا And they say

And they say, “Our Rabb, hasten our part (Your writ) upon us before the Day of Reckoning.

اصْبِرْ Be patient

Be patient with what they say, and remember Dawood, our influential servant. Indeed, He was returning (to Us from all directions).

38:18


إِنَّا Indeed We

سَخَّرْنَا We subjected

بِالْعَشِيِّ in the evening

وَالْإِشْرَاقِ and [the] sunrise

١٨

سَخَرَ جبل سبح عَشَا شَرَقَ


Indeed, we subdued the mountains for him, and they used to glorify Us with him at night and at the rising of the sun.

38:19


وَالطَّيْرَ And the birds

And all the birds used to gather (come to him) from every direction, obedient to him.

وَشَدَدْنَا And We strengthened

وَآتَيْنَاهُ and We gave him

الْحِكْمَةَ [the] wisdom

شَدَّ ملك أتى حَكَمَ فَصَلَ خَطَبَ


And We strengthened his kingdom and granted him wisdom and conclusive decision-making power.

38:21


وَهَلْ And has (there)?

And did the news of the argument come to you? When they climbed over the prayer niche?

دَخَلَ فَزِعَ قَالَ خَفَيَ خَصَمَ بغى بَعَضَ بَعَضَ حَكَمَ بَا نَ حَقَّ شَطَّ هَدَى سَوِيَ صِرَاط


When they entered (home of) Dawood, he became afraid of them. They said, “Do not be afraid. We two are litigants; one of us oppressed the other, so decide between us with justice, and do not be excessive, and lead us to the right path (decide for us).”

أ خو تِسْعِ تِسْعِ نَعْجَة نَعْجَة أحد قَالَ كَفَلَ عَزَّ فِي خَطَبَ


“Indeed, this is my brother, and with him is ninety-nine ewes, and for me, there is one ewe. Now he says, “Pledge that (one ewe) to me, and he overpowers me with words.”

وَخَرَّ and fell down

وَأَنَابَ and turned in repentance

٢٤

قَالَ ظَلَمَ سأل نَعْجَة نَعْجَة كَثَرَ خَلَطَ بغى بَعَضَ بَعَضَ أَ مُنَ عَمِلَ صَلَحَ قَلَّ ظَنَّ فَتَنَ غفر رَبّ خَرَّ رَكَعَ نَابَ


He said, “He has oppressed you by asking your ewe and his ewes (female sheep). Many people oppress one another, except those who believe and do righteous deeds, but there are so few.” And Dawood realized that We were tempting him (he should have also listened to the defendant), so he asked for forgiveness from his Rabb and prostrated in prayer and repented. ۩ Prostration

38:25


فَغَفَرْنَا So We forgave

غفر عَنَدَ زَلَفَ حَسَنَ أ و ب


So, We forgave him about that. And he has close access to Us and (We have) a good place to return.

يَادَاوُودُ O Dawood!

إِنَّا Indeed We

جَعَلْنَاكَ [We] have made you

جعل خَلَفَ فِي أَ رَضْ حَكَمَ بَا نَ أَنِسَ حَقَّ تبِع هوى ضلّ سَبَلَ إِله ضلّ سَبَلَ إِله عَذُبَ شَدَّ نَسِيَ يوْم حَسَبَ


“O Dawood, We made you a successor in the earth, so judge between humankind with justice, and do not follow the desires, lest they mislead you from the path of Allah. For those who are misled by the way of Allah for them, there is a painful punishment for forgetting the Day of the Account.

النَّارِ the Fire

خَلَقَ سَمِي أَ رَضْ بَا نَ بَطَلَ ظَنَّ كَفَرَ كَفَرَ نَار


And We did not create the universe, the earth, and everything between them to be useless. That is the opinion of those who are unjust, so a disaster for those unjust (they will suffer) from the Fire.

جعل أَ مُنَ عَمِلَ صَلَحَ فَسَدَ فِي أَ رَضْ جعل تقى فجر


Or should We make those who believe and do righteous deeds like those who cause corruption and evil on the earth? Or should We make those who are fearful of God like those who are immoral?

كَتَبَ نَزَلَ بَرَكَ دبر آ ىي -آية ذَكّرَ أ و لبْ


A Book that We have sent down on you is a blessing to contemplate and for those with intelligence to think in its verses.

وَوَهَبْنَا And We gave

And We granted Suleiman to Dawood, an excellent worshipper (of Allah). He was returning to Allah from all directions.

He said, "I preferred to love the good to remember my Rabb" until they (horses) disappear in the veil (of the night).

رُدُّوهَا Return them

"Return here (horses) to me." And he began stroking with his hands on their legs and the necks.

And indeed, We tempted Suleiman, and We let a (lifeless) body drop (inherit) at his throne; (end of the system of the hereditary monarchy), then he returned.

He said, “My Rabb, forgive me, and grant me a kingdom no one will reach after me. You are the Most Generous.”

فَسَخَّرْنَا Then We subjected

وَالشَّيَاطِينَ And the devils

And remember Our servant (Ayoub (Job), when he called his Rabb, “Indeed, Satan has afflicted me with calamity and torment.”

And We granted him family and like them (and additional family members) with them, as a mercy from Us, and remembrance for the intelligent (people) to think.

“Hold a bouquet in your hand, strike with it, and do not break your oath.” Indeed, We found him patient. What an excellent worshipper! He was returning (to Allah from all directions).

Firmly established there, they will ask for many fruits and drinks.

All this. And (but) for the aggressors is an evil place of return.

فَلْيَذُوقُوهُ Then let them taste it

“This army is rushing (plunging) with you.” There is no welcoming for them. They will be burning in the Fire.

They (evildoers) will say (to their leaders), “But you (too) there is no welcome for yourself! You brought this on us! What an evil place to settle!”

كَانَ علِم مَلَأَ عَلَا خَصَمَ


I did not know the high chiefs (angles) when they were disputing (the creation of man).

إِن Not

In

يُوحَىٰٓ has been revealed

أَنَّمَآ that only

وَحَى نَذَرَ بَا نَ


It is inspired to me that I am only a clear warner.”

قَالَ رَبَّ ملك خَلَقَ بشر طِيِن


When your Rabb said to the angels, “I am going to create man from clay.

38:72


فَإِذَا So when

سَوِيَ نَفَخَ فِي رَاحَ وقع سَجَدَ


After properly proportioning his body (how tall, how heavy, how big his heart, eyes, ears, mouth, etc.) and blowing My Soul into him, then fall to prostrate in front of him.

38:73


فَسَجَدَ So prostrated

سَجَدَ ملك كُلّ جَمَعَ


So, the angels prostrated all together.

38:74


إِلَّآ Except

Illa

إِبْلِيسَ Iblis

اسْتَكْبَرَ he was arrogant

الْكَافِرِينَ the disbelievers

Except for Iblis. He was arrogant and ungrateful.

يَاإِبْلِيسُ O Iblis!

قَالَ مَنَعَ سَجَدَ خَلَقَ يدي كَبَرَ كَانَ عَلَا


He said, “O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating to whom I created with My hands? Have you become arrogant, or are you from the higher ranks?”

38:76

قَالَ خَيرَ خَلَقَ نَار خَلَقَ طِيِن


He said, “I am better than him; You created me from fire. And You created him from clay.”

قَالَ He said

Qala

فَاخْرُجْ Then get out

فَإِنَّكَ for indeed you

رَجِيمٌ (are) accursed

قَالَ خرج رَجَمَ


He said, “Then exit from here! You are cursed!

وَإِنَّ And indeed

عَلَيْكَ upon you

لَعْنَتِىٓ (is) My curse

الدِّينِ (of) Judgment

لَعَنَ يوْم دَنَا


And on you is My curse until the Day of Judgment.”

38:79


قَالَ He said

رَبِّ My Lord!

فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ Then give me respite

يُبْعَثُونَ they are resurrected

قَالَ رَبَّ نَظَرَ يوْم بعث


He said, “My Rabb, grant me delay until the day they are raised.”

قَالَ He said

Qala

فَإِنَّكَ Then indeed you

الْمُنظَرِينَ those given respite

قَالَ نَظَرَ


He said, “You are from those granted respite.

38:81


إِلَىٰ Until

Ila

يَوْمِ (the) Day

الْوَقْتِ (of) the time

الْمَعْلُومِ well-known

Until the time known.”

فَبِعِزَّتِكَ Then by Your might

fabiAAizzatika

لَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ I will surely mislead them

أَجْمَعِينَ all

ajmaAAeena
ج م ع
٨٢

قَالَ عَزَّ غَوَى جَمَعَ


He said, “By Your Power, I will surely misguide them altogether.

إِلَّا Except

عِبَادَكَ Your slaves

الْمُخْلَصِينَ the chosen ones

Except for Your loyal worshippers.

فَالْحَقُّ Then (it is) the truth

وَالْحَقَّ and the truth

He said, “So, be the truth, and the truth I tell.

لَأَمْلَأَنَّ Surely I will fill

I will fill Hell with you and with those who follow you, all together.”

Say, “I ask of no reward from you for this, and I am not responsible.

This is only a remembrance for the world.

وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّ And surely you will know
