83:1


وَيْلٌ Woe

Waylun
و ي ل
لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ to those who give less

lilmutaffifeena

وَيْل طف


Disaster for those who are stingy (trade with a deficiency).

الَّذِينَ Those who

Allatheena

إِذَا when

اكْتَالُواْ they take a measure

النَّاسِ the people

يَسْتَوْفُونَ they take in full

كال أَنِسَ وَفَى


Those, when dealing with the measurement with humans, demand a complete (measure).

83:3


وَإِذَا But when

كَالُوهُمْ they give by measure (to) them

وَّزَنُوهُمْ they weigh (for) them

يُخْسِرُونَ they give less

كال وزن خَسِرَ


But when they give by measure to them, or they weigh them, they cheat.

83:4


أَلَا Do not?

يَظُنُّ think

أَنَّهُم that they

مَّبْعُوثُونَ (will be) resurrected

ظَنَّ بعث


Do they not think that they will be resurrected (raised)?

لِيَوْمٍ For a Day

Liyawmin

عَظِيمٍ Great

يوْم عَظُمَ


On a Great Day?

يَوْمَ (The) Day

Yawma

يَقُومُ will stand

النَّاسُ mankind

لِرَبِّ before (the) Lord

الْعَالَمِينَ (of) the worlds

يوْم قَامَ أَنِسَ رَبَّ علِم


The Day when humankind will stand before the Rabb of the Universe?

كَلَّآ Nay!

Kalla

إِنَّ Indeed

كِتَابَ (the) record

kitaba

الْفُجَّارِ (of) the wicked

لَفِى (is) surely in

سِجِّينٍ Sijjin

sijjeenin

كَتَبَ فجر سَجَنَ


Certainly not! The account of the sinners will be in (the register) of the prisoner.

وَمَآ And what?

Wama

أَدْرَاكَ can make you know

سِجِّينٌ (is) Sijjin

دَرَك سَجَنَ


But what do you comprehend what is (register of) prisoner?

كِتَابٌ A book

Kitabun

مَّرْقُومٌ written

marqoomun

كَتَبَ رَقَمَ


An account is recorded in numbers.

83:10


وَيْلٌ Woe

Waylun
و ي ل
يَوْمَئِذٍ that Day

yawmaithin

لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ to the deniers

lilmukaththibeena

وَيْل كَذَبَ


Destruction on that Day for the liars.

الَّذِينَ Those who

Allatheena

يُكَذِّبُونَ deny

بِيَوْمِ (the) Day

الدِّينِ (of) the Judgment

كَذَبَ يوْم دَنَا


Those who deny the Final Judgment Day.

وَمَا And not

Wama

يُكَذِّبُ can deny

بِهِۦٓ [of] it

bihi

إِلَّا except

illa

كُلُّ every

kullu
ك ل ل
مُعْتَدٍ transgressor

muAAtadin
ع د و
أَثِيمٍ sinful

atheemin

كَذَبَ كُلّ عَتُدَ أثِم


But none denies it except one who is ready to sin.

83:13


إِذَا When

Itha

تُتْلَىٰ are recited

اٰيَاتُنَا Our Verses

أَسَاطِيرُ Stories

الْأَوَّلِينَ (of) the former (people)

تلو آ ىي -آية قَالَ سَطَرَ ا و ل


When our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are the fable myths of the ancients.”

83:14


كَلَّا Nay!

Kalla

بَلْ But

bal

رَانَ (the) stain has covered

قُلُوبِهِم their hearts

مَّا (for) what

كَانُوا they used to

kanoo

يَكْسِبُونَ earn

yaksiboona

رَانَ قلب كَانَ كَسَبَ


Certainly not! The rust on their hearts is due to what they have earned.

83:15


كَلَّآ Nay!

Kalla

إِنَّهُمْ Indeed they

innahum

عَن from

رَّبِّهِمْ their Lord

rabbihim
ر ب ب
يَوْمَئِذٍ that Day

yawmaithin

لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ surely will be partitioned

lamahjooboona
ح ج ب
١٥

رَبَّ حَجَبَ


Certainly not! On that day, they will be screened off from their Rabb.

83:16


ثُمَّ Then

Thumma

إِنَّهُمْ indeed they

innahum

لَصَالُوا (surely) will burn

الْجَحِيمِ (in) the Hellfire

صَلَى جحم


Then they will burn in the hellfire.

ثُمَّ Then

Thumma

يُقَالُ it will be said

الَّذِى (is) what

كُنتُم you used to

بِهِۦ [of it]

تُكَذِّبُونَ deny

قَالَ كَانَ كَذَبَ


Then they will be told, “This is what you have been denying.”

كَلَّآ Nay!

كَتَبَ بَرَّ عَلَّ


Certainly not; the account of the righteous will be in Seventh Heaven (loftiest Heights, Paradise).

وَمَآ And what?

أَدْرَاكَ can make you know

But what do you comprehend what Seventh Heaven (loftiest Heights, Paradise) is?

كِتَابٌ A book

Kitabun

مَّرْقُومٌ written

كَتَبَ رَقَمَ


An account recorded in numbers (as a reward, they will be in Seventh Heaven's loftiest Heights, Paradise).

يَشْهَدُهُ Witness it

Yashhaduhu

الْمُقَرَّبُونَ those brought near

شَهِدَ قرُب


They will be witnessed by those who are near.

83:22


إِنَّ Indeed

Inna

الْأَبْرَارَ the righteous

نَعِيمٍ bliss

بَرَّ نَعَمَ


Indeed, the righteous will be in blessed comfort.

عَلَى On

الْأَرَائِكِ thrones

رَأَى نَظَرَ


On the couches, they will be watching.

تَعْرِفُ You will recognize

نَضْرَةَ (the) radiance

عَرَفَ فِي وَجَهَ نَضَرَ نَعَمَ


Identifiable by their blissful faces.

يُسْقَوْنَ They will be given to drink

رَّحِيقٍ a pure wine

مَّخْتُومٍ sealed

سَقَى رَحِمَ خَتَمَ


The nectar of delicious, sealed beverages will be provided for them.

خِتَامُهُۥ Its seal

Khitamuhu

مِسْكٌ (will be of) musk

وَفِى And for

wafee

ذَٰلِكَ that

thalika

فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ let aspire

falyatanafasi
ن ف س
الْمُتَنَافِسُونَ the aspirers

ن ف س
٢٦

خَتَمَ مسك نفُس نفُس


Using musk, the seal will be scented, and the competitors will be able to compete.

وَمِزَاجُهُۥ And its mixture

مِن (is) of

تَسْنِيمٍ Tasneem

مَزَجَ سنم


Its blend is mixed from Tasneem.

83:28


عَيْنًا A spring

يَشْرَبُ will drink

بِهَا from it

biha

الْمُقَرَّبُونَ those brought near

عين شَرِبَ قرُب


Close companions will drink from this spring.

إِنَّ Indeed

Inna

الَّذِينَ those who

allatheena

أَجْرَمُواْ committed crimes

كَانُواْ used to

ك و ن
مِنَ at

mina

الَّذِينَ those who

allatheena

اٰمَنُواْ believed

amanoo
أ م ن
يَضْحَكُونَ laugh

جرم كَانَ أَ مُنَ ضَحِكَ


Those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.

83:30


وَإِذَا And when

Waitha

مَرُّواْ they passed

بِهِمْ by them

bihim

يَتَغَامَزُونَ they winked at one another

مرّ غَمَزَ


And when they walked past them, they would wink at each other.

وَإِذَا And when

Waitha

انقَلَبُواْ they returned

inqalaboo

إِلَىٰٓ to

ila

أَهْلِهِمُ their people

ahlihimu
أ ه ل
انقَلَبُواْ they would return

inqalaboo
ق ل ب
فَكِهِينَ jesting

fakiheena
ف ك ه
٣١

قلب أهَلَ قلب فَكِهَ


And when they returned to their families, they went back laughing (at the believers).

83:32


وَإِذَا And when

Waitha

رَأَوْهُمْ they saw them

قَالُوٓاْ they said

إِنَّ Indeed

هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ these

haolai

لَضَآلُّونَ surely have gone astray

ladalloona

رَأَى قَالَ ضلّ


And when they saw them, they would say, “These are the ones who are misled.”

وَمَآ But not

Wama

أُرْسِلُوا they had been sent

عَلَيْهِمْ over them

AAalayhim

حَافِظِينَ (as) guardians

رَسِلَ حَفِظَ


Yet, they (unbelievers) were not sent as observers over them (believers).

فَالْيَوْمَ So today

الَّذِينَ those who

اٰمَنُواْ believed

مِنَ at

الْكُفَّارِ the disbelievers

يَضْحَكُونَ they will laugh

يوْم أَ مُنَ كَفَرَ ضَحِكَ


But today, those who believe will laugh at the nonbelievers.

Have the nonbelievers been rewarded for what they used to do?
