89:1


وَالْفَجْرِ By the dawn

وَلَيَالٍ And the nights

And by the ten nights.

وَالَّيْلِ And the night

Did you not see how your Rabb dealt with Add?

إِرَمَ Iram

Irama

الَّتِى Which

الْبِلَادِ the cities

خَلَقَ مَثَلَ فِي بَلَدَ


The like of which was not created in the cities.

وَثَمُودَ And Thamud

Wathamooda

الَّذِينَ who

allatheena

جَابُوا carved out

الصَّخْرَ the rocks

بِالْوَادِ in the valley

bialwadi
و د ي

جاب صَخْرَ وَدَى


And Samoud, who cut through the rocks of the valley.

89:10


وَفِرْعَوْنَ And Firaun

WafirAAawna

ذِى owner of

الْأَوْتَادِ stakes

ذُو نهر


And Firon with stakes (fastened securely temples, pyramids with columns of solid base).

الَّذِينَ Who

Allatheena

طَغَوْا transgressed

الْبِلَادِ the lands

طَغَا فِي بَلَدَ


Those who exceeded the boundaries in the towns.

فَأَكْثَرُوا And (made) much

الْفَسَادَ corruption

كَثَرَ فَسَدَ


And many of those in them were with immorality.

فَصَبَّ So poured

عَذَابٍ (of) punishment

صَبَّ رَبَّ سَاطَ عَذُبَ


So, your Rabb poured a whip (lash) of punishment upon them.

إِنَّ Indeed

Inna

رَبَّكَ your Lord

لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ (is) surely Ever Watchful

Indeed, Your Rabb is observing.

فَأَمَّا And as for

Faamma

الْإِنسَانُ man

فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ and is generous to him

فَيَقُولُ he says

رَبِّىٓ My Lord

أَكْرَمَنِ has honored me

أَنِسَ بَتَلَ رَبَّ كَرُمَ نَعَمَ قَالَ رَبَّ كَرُمَ


As for humankind, whenever his Rabb tests him, generously awards him, and provides him with luxury, he says, “My Rabb has been generous to me.”

89:16


وَأَمَّآ But

أَهَانَنِ (has) humiliated me

بَتَلَ قدر رَزَقَ قَالَ رَبَّ هَانَ


But whenever he is tested and awarded with measured provisions, he says, “My Rabb has degraded me.”

89:17


كَلَّا Nay!

Kalla

تُكْرِمُونَ you honor

الْيَتِيمَ the orphan

كَرُمَ يتم


Certainly not. But you are not generous (give respect) to the orphans.

وَلَا And not

Wala

تَحَاضُّونَ you feel the urge

طَعَامِ feed

الْمِسْكِينِ the poor

حَضَّ طَعِمَ سَكَنَ


And you do not incite on feeding the poor.

89:19


وَتَأْكُلُونَ And you consume

التُّرَاثَ the inheritance

أكل وَرَثَ أكل هَلُمَّ


And you devour the inheritance altogether.

وَتُحِبُّونَ And you love

حُبًّا (with) love

حَبَّ مَال حَبَّ جَمَّ


And you love to gather wealth.

كَلَّآ Nay!

Kalla

الْأَرْضُ the earth

دَكَّ أَ رَضْ دَكَّ دَكَّ


Certainly not, when the earth is beaten down, demolished, and destroyed.

وَجَآءَ And comes

رَبُّكَ your Lord

وَالْمَلَكُ and the Angels

جَاءَ رَبَّ ملك صَفَّ صَفَّ


And your Rabb Arrives, and the angels, in row after row.

89:23


وَجِىٓءَ And is brought

يَوْمَئِذٍ that Day

بِجَهَنَّمَ Hell

يَوْمَئِذٍ That Day

yawmaithin

يَتَذَكَّرُ will remember

yatathakkaru
ذ ك ر
الْإِنسَانُ man

alinsanu
أ ن س
وَأَنَّىٰ but how?

waanna
أ ن ي
لَهُ (will be) for him

lahu

الذِّكْرَىٰ the remembrance

alththikra
ذ ك ر
٢٣

جَاءَ ذَكّرَ أَنِسَ أنى ذَكّرَ


And on that Day, hellfire will be brought. On that day, humankind will remember, but how will the remembrance avail him? (On that day, the remembrance will not help him).

89:24


يَقُولُ He will say

Yaqoolu
ق و ل
يَالَيْتَنِى O I wish!

yalaytanee

قَدَّمْتُ I had sent forth

qaddamtu
ق د م
لِحَيَاتِى for my life

lihayatee
ح ي ي
٢٤

قَالَ قَدَمَ حي


He will say, “I wish my life would have been brought before me.”

89:25


فَيَوْمَئِذٍ So that Day

يُعَذِّبُ will punish

عَذَابَهُۥٓ (as) His punishment

أَحَدٌ anyone

٢٥

عَذُبَ عَذُبَ أحد


On that Day, no one will punish him as He punishes.

89:26


وَلَا And not

Wala

يُوثِقُ will bind

وَثَاقَهُۥٓ (as) His binding

wathaqahu
و ث ق
أَحَدٌ anyone

وَثَقَ وَثَقَ أحد


And nobody will be firm like His firmness.

89:27


يَاأَيَّتُهَا O

Yaayyatuha

النَّفْسُ soul!

الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ who is satisfied

نفُس طَمِعَ


But as for you, O soul with the peace and tranquility.

ارْجِعِىٓ Return

إِلَىٰ to

رَبِّكِ your Lord

رَاضِيَةً well pleased

مَّرْضِيَّةً and pleasing

mardiyyatan

رَجَعَ رَبَّ رَضِيَ مَرِضَ


Return to your Rabb, satisfied and in acceptance.

فَادْخُلِى So enter

عِبَادِى My slaves

دَخَلَ فِي عَبَدَ


Enter with my worshipers.

وَادْخُلِى And enter

جَنَّتِى My Paradise

Enter my Gardens of Paradise.
